Kevin Cleary - Finalist
In recognition of everything he does for the Almondbury Striders and the community at large, we are very pleased to announce that Kev has been shortlisted for a BBC Make A Difference Award.
The ceremony takes place Saturday 13th September 2025.
We'd like to nominate Kev Cleary for the Active Award. Kev is the founder and heart of the Almondbury Striders.
A former marathon and triathlon competitor, Kev knows running is about far more than fitness. It's about connection, confidence and community. Back in 2020, he saw a need for something friendly and inclusive in Almondbury and started the Striders to bring people together, no matter their age, pace or background.
Today, over 50 of us call the Striders our running home, making us one of the biggest running groups in Huddersfield. Some joined to get fitter. Others were looking for friendship, or something positive during tough times such coping with bereavement, divorce or mental health issues. Whether people are looking to meet new people, settle in to the area or escape from family life for a couple of hours each week, the Striders fulfils a key role in the local community.
Kev's always finding ways to give back. He's the facilitator that makes everything happen. Together, we've raised hundreds of pounds for charities such as the Motor Neurone Disease Association, funded two benches in our village in memory of a former member and continue to host regular events such as sponsored walks, social evenings and Couch to 5K fitness programmes.
Kev doesn't run anymore but he's at every event, cheering us along!
He does it all without fuss, simply because he cares.
Kev has changed lives in Almondbury. He's our champion and deserves to be celebrated!
